About the Naples Underground

Beneath the traffic of the historic centre lies a second Naples: some 40 metres down, a network of tuff tunnels and cisterns that began as Greek quarries, became a Roman aqueduct, and sheltered families through the bombing of the Second World War. Today you descend around 121 steps to walk the water channels, cross a narrow candle-lit passage, and surface into a Roman theatre hidden beneath modern apartments. History

Quarried by Greeks, engineered into an aqueduct by Romans, abandoned after a cholera epidemic in the 1880s, and reopened decades later — the tunnels carry two and a half thousand years of the city's life. It is not the Catacombs of San Gennaro, which are a separate site.
