What a Naples Underground entry ticket actually is

Admission to one specific underground, bought ahead, with the time you have booked spent at the site rather than walking to it. On three of the four a guide comes with the ticket, because those sites do not sell an unguided visit. On the fourth you walk it yourself with a free audio guide.

What you do not get is the historic centre. You go straight to a fixed address, go down, come up, and the rest of the day is yours.

Why choose an entry ticket rather than a walking tour

All of your time is spent underground

The whole booking is the visit. On a walking tour the underground share can be as little as twenty minutes of a three-hour product; here it is everything you paid for.

The price band is a third of the alternative

$10 to $20 against $33 to $89. That is not a quality gap, it is a guide’s afternoon and ninety minutes of city walking that you may not want.

You go straight to the door

No meeting in a square, no walking party. The address on your booking is the address you go to, which on a tight schedule or a cruise call matters more than anything else here.

The official route, straight in

Ninety minutes to two hours in Napoli Sotterranea with the queue skipped and a guide throughout.

From $20 per personCheck AvailabilitySold non-refundable — pick the date you mean

Entry tickets vs walking tours

Same decision from the other side. If the tunnels are what you came for, this table settles it; if the city is, the other format wins.

What you get, and what you don’t

Included: entry to the site named, and a guide on three of the four. Two include a skip-the-line ticket outright. One includes a free audio guide, and one opens the Catacombs of San Gennaro free for the following twelve months. One offers pizza with a soft drink as a paid option.

Excluded: food, drink and transport on the ones that itemise them, and the two-euro on-site guided visit at San Lorenzo Maggiore, which is paid at the desk rather than online. Nothing here includes hotel pickup, and nothing here needs it.

Planning your entry

Four sites, four timetables. The official route runs hourly from 10.00 to 18.00 with a 21.00 Thursday slot by reservation. The Spanish Quarters route runs three times on a weekday and five on a Sunday. San Lorenzo Maggiore keeps museum hours, 09:30 to 17:30 daily. The catacombs run hourly, 10:00 to 17:00, closed Wednesdays.

Two of the four share Piazza San Gaetano, at numbers 69 and 316, which makes them the easiest pairing in the city — a one-minute walk between two completely different undergrounds. Hours and departure times has every timetable, and getting to the entrances has the doors.

Who should choose something else

Three readers are better served elsewhere.

The step-free one, and the cheapest

A Roman market street ten metres down, self-paced with a free audio guide, plus the whole complex above it.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Naples Underground entry ticket include?

Admission to the underground it names, and on three of the four a guide as well. One is a self-guided ticket with a free audio guide instead.

Are entry tickets cheaper than walking tours?

Substantially. The band here is $10 to $20 against $33 to $89, and all of the booked time is spent below ground rather than on the streets above it.

Can I buy one at the door?

At San Lorenzo Maggiore, yes, outside the summer guided-visits window. The catacombs require a reservation. The two guided tunnel routes sell departures rather than admissions.

Which entry ticket is step-free?

The San Lorenzo Maggiore ticket. Its excavation sits about ten metres down and its excavation sits about ten metres down and takes a wheelchair; everything else here descends a long staircase.

Do any of them skip the queue?

Two say so explicitly. On the official route the wording is careful: a shorter wait at the entrance rather than a priority lane.

Is one of them non-refundable?

One. The official Napoli Sotterranea entry ticket is sold non-refundable, and its card here says so. Everything else refunds in full up to 24 hours before.

How long do they take?

Forty-five minutes for a catacomb, an hour under the Spanish Quarters, and ninety minutes to two hours on the official route. San Lorenzo Maggiore has no fixed length, because you walk it at your own pace.
